South Korea simplifies visa procedures for 16 technical majors
According to a new regulation approved by the South Korean Ministry of Justice, the process of submitting financial documents for international students admitted to 16 special professional technical majors (D-2 visas) in the country has been simplified.
In accordance with this decision, candidates applying to strategic majors of designated universities will be exempted from the obligation to submit bank statements and income certificates.
List of strategic majors and regions
This exemption applies to certain majors of the following educational institutions that train highly qualified specialists needed for the Korean labor market:
• Gyeonggi region: Gyeonggi Science & Tech Univ. (Future Electric Vehicles), Daelim Univ. (Automotive Engineering), Bucheon Univ. (Textiles and Fashion), Seojeong Univ. (Global Fashion Business), Osan Univ. (Electrical Engineering), Yongin Arts & Science Univ. (Automotive Mechanical Engineering).
• Busan and Ulsan: Kyungnam College of Info & Tech (Mechanical Engineering), Dong-eui IT (Mechanical Engineering), Busan Science & Tech Univ. (Automotive Engineering), Ulsan College (Mechanical Engineering).
• Other regions: Yeungjin Polytech (Daegu – Smart CAD/CAM), Gumi Univ. (Gyeongbuk – Construction Engineering), Geoje Univ. (Gyeongnam – Mechanical Engineering), Kunjang Univ. (Jeonbuk – Smart Agrotechnology), Jeonju Vision Univ. (Jeonbuk – Future Mobility), Mokpo Science Univ. (Jeonnam – Renewable Energy).
Importance of the new procedure
Usually, the Republic of Korea’s overseas missions require a document confirming the availability of funds in a bank account of 10,000 to 20,000 USD when issuing a student visa. The new procedure aims to reduce this financial pressure on applicants.
Experts believe that students who study in these areas are also expected to have access to professional work visas (E-7) after graduation. This measure is part of Korea's policy to attract qualified foreign personnel in the technological sector.
This privilege is only valid for students admitted to specific faculties and areas listed on the official list. The acceptance and requirements for documents are determined by the internal regulations of each university.
